How to use it

  1. Enter the number of teams. The count must be a whole number from 2 to 1,024.
  2. Choose single or double elimination.
  3. Read the bracket size, byes, rounds and estimated game count in the summary.
  4. Choose Print or save the result as a PDF from your browser’s print dialog.

How it works

  • The bracket size is the smallest power of two that can hold every team. Any open places are byes, so those teams move past the opening round without playing.
  • Rounds are the number of times the bracket halves, from its opening round to the final. Single elimination uses one fewer game than the number of teams. Double elimination shows the standard 2n − 2 game estimate; a possible final reset is not included.

First-round byes

B=P−N
B
first-round byes
P
places in the next power-of-two bracket
N
teams entered

Worked example

32−20=12

20 teams fit into a 32-place bracket, leaving 12 byes.

Single-elimination games

G=N−1
G
games in a single-elimination tournament
N
teams entered

Worked example

20−1=19

A 20-team single-elimination tournament needs 19 games to leave one champion.

Double-elimination game estimate

G=2×N−2
G
games before a possible final reset
N
teams entered

Worked example

2×20−2=38

The estimate is 38 games. A final reset, if required by the format, adds one game.

Worked example

20teams
32bracket places
12byes
5rounds

Single elimination has 19 games for 20 teams. Byes fill the 12 bracket places without an opening match.

Frequently asked questions

What is a tournament bye?

A bye is an empty opening-round place that lets one team advance without playing that round.

How are the byes calculated?

The calculator rounds the team count up to the next power of two, then subtracts the team count. It reports how many bye places the bracket needs; seeding rules decide which teams receive them.

How many games are in a single-elimination tournament?

A single-elimination tournament with n teams needs n − 1 games, because each game eliminates one team until one winner remains.

Does the double-elimination total include a reset final?

No. It uses the standard 2n − 2 game estimate and does not add a possible reset game.
