How to use it
- Choose the number of skaters on at once, then set period length and substitution interval.
- Add each player once. To keep a goalkeeper in goal for the full game, turn on Fixed goalkeeper and select that player.
- Choose how many forwards are on at once; remaining skaters are grouped into defence pairs. These labels are planning slots that you can adjust to your team.
- Make the plan, review the shift and player totals, then save, share, print or download the CSV.
How the rotation works
- The tool divides the game into equal blocks. Each block rotates the ordered player list through the selected skater slots using the shared LineupSheet rotation method.
- Playing time is the number of blocks assigned to a player multiplied by the substitution interval. A fixed goalkeeper stays in goal and is left out of the rotating group.
- Forward labels are grouped into lines of three and defence labels into pairs. The groups are a convenient display, not a league rule.
- The interval must divide each period and the whole game evenly so no block crosses a period boundary.
Number of blocks
- B
- number of blocks
- T
- total game minutes
- I
- minutes between substitutions
Worked example
60 game minutes divided into 2-minute intervals gives 30 blocks.
Minutes for one player
- M
- the player’s total minutes
- b
- blocks played by this player
- I
- minutes in each block
Worked example
15 blocks of 2 minutes gives this player 30 minutes of playing time.
Worked example
With no fixed goalkeeper, one goalie slot and five skater slots rotate through the ordered roster. The example uses three forward slots and two defence slots as planner labels.
This is a worked calculation for the selected inputs, not a claim that every ice hockey competition uses these line combinations or timings.
Frequently asked questions
How many skaters should I put on?
Enter the number used by your ice hockey competition. Formats can differ by age group and competition, so check the applicable official rules.
How does the rotation balance playing time?
Players cycle through the available slots in the order listed. If the game has more than one full fair rotation cycle, some players can receive an extra block; the summary shows the actual minutes for everyone.
Can I keep the same goalkeeper?
Yes. Turn on Fixed goalkeeper and select a player from the list. That player stays in goal and the other players rotate through the field or skater slots.
Why must the interval divide each period?
That keeps every shift within a period and gives the plan clear start and end times. Choose a different interval if it would cross a period boundary.
Are the forward line and defence pair labels official positions?
No. On the ice version they organize the slots in the plan. Check your competition rules and adjust the number of forwards and skaters to suit your team.
